4

Today is E’s 4th birthday, which, in all honesty, surprises the heck out of me. This morning I was informed that he “grew up into a kid like I8”. I think this perfectly sums up the experience of being a younger sibling (well, not that I would know, since I am the oldest but, you know). Then he ran off with his new iPod (his VERY OWN!) singing along with his favorite song, the Banana Phone Song.

What passes for normal around here.

Me: “I8, no licking your brother.”

I8: “Okay.”

*sigh*

Me: “I know you’re PRETENDING to be a kitty, E3, but you still make your pee-pee in the potty, NOT in the litter box!

E3: “Meow!”

*sigh*

No Post Title This Time.

Dear Blog, I know it’s been a few days since my last post. Things around here have been busy. Over the weekend we all went to the Shore, staying with Mr. Interrupted’s aunt and uncle (and a couple of cousins) in their gorgeous house a mere block from the beach.

It was like a dream. Imagine rolling out of bed into your bathing suit and strolling down to the ocean after a quick breakfast. Lunchtime? Just pop back to the house for a quick bite to eat and maybe a nap before heading back. Everything about it was just wonderful. The boys had a marvelous time.

I7 learned how to boogie board (and he doesn’t even know how to swim!) and E3 and I had a grand time playing in the surf together and collecting shells. The boys dug a great big hole.

(down to the water table, which, frankly, I didn’t know was possible)

I knitted.

I couldn’t ask for a more perfect vacation.

Fairy Dust Dreams

Isaac had to have two baby teeth extracted the other day so you know what that means–a visit from the tooth fairy! For some reason, our tooth fairy thought it would be a fun and good idea if she left superfine glitter fairy dust all over the sink in the bathroom (also, the floor). Why the bathroom sink you ask? When Isaac lost his first tooth, there were all sorts of questions I wasn’t really prepared to answer. The tooth fairy is not the same as Santa, you see. Santa is easy. It’s pretty well established where Santa comes from and how he gets in your house and what he does when he gets there. The tooth fairy, however, that’s a different story all together and, frankly, I didn’t have a firmly established mythos about the tooth fairy to answer the questions that came up when they came up. So I improvised. And what do you get when you improvise? A tooth fairy that enters and exits the house through the drain in the sink.

A Joke

Last night, at dinner, E3 told a joke he thinks says he made up. In his best Darth Vader impression he intoned, “Use the fork, Luke. It’s dinnertime!” Then he gathered up his sippy cup and his light saber and promptly fell asleep on the floor.

Monday already?

And I haven’t posted since Wednesday? Sorry everyone. It’s not that I’m particularly busy, but I am trying to spend less time at the computer, so I guess it follows that there will be less time for blogging. The Internet can often be a gift (where else can you find such hilarious entertainments as David After Dentist or Kittens, Inspried by Kittens!!! ??). But I have, over the course of the last couple of months, developed a rather troubling pain in my left shoulder and arm that, according to my physical therapist, is likely related to my extensive computer usage.

This winter has been extremely long and very cold with a seemingly endless stretch of persistent and bitterly cold weather coupled with well timed winter storms that meant there has been snow on the ground almost continually since the middle of December. I find that I’ve been spending a lot of time at the computer and everything else in my life has suffered–the housework, my knitting, my Weight Watchers program, probably even the children. Last week, I canceled many of my rss feed subscriptions, including those for Buzzfeed and BoingBoing. I now find myself with more hours in the day for housework, knitting, writing and yoga (which I hope will help improve the hunched computer user’s posture I’ve developed over the last several months).

I’m so glad winter is almost finished.

Ah, yes…

I’ve just finished putting away the Thanksgiving leftovers and am sitting here, enjoying a cup of coffee and the last couple of bites of E3’s pumpkin pie. I must say that I’m quite tickled with myself. The ginormous bird was roasted to juicy perfection. The stuffing, cooked in the crockpot with the turkey’s wingtips and tail, was delightfully deletable. The gravy, made with giblet broth (but no giblets) and turkey drippings, was velvety and flavorful. The green salad was cool and crisp, a perfect complement the savory warmth of the other dishes. All in all, it was probably the best Thanksgiving meal I’ve ever made. Sadly, there are no pictures. The entire meal had been consumed before it occurred to me to document it in photographic posterity. Oh well.

There’s another reason today is a special day. Today is I’s 7th birthday.

How is it even possible? I can’t believe he’s seven already! Isaac had a pretty good year. He learned how to tie his shoes this year, and how to ride a bicycle (skipping over training wheels entirely). He has really started getting a handle on reading and math and we earned that, for I7, the number zero is really really red, the color of fire, and that the larger a number is, the greener it is.

Anyhow, happy Thanksgiving to all my bloggy buddies and long distance friends. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! (And a happy birthday if today also happens to be your birthday, hah!)

How I made a Batman Costume

E3 decided at the last possible minute that he would really prefer to be Batman instead Darth Vader for Halloween this year. I searched the local costume shops for a little boy sized Batman costume to no avail, and eventually decided to haul out the ol’ Kenmore.

Three years or so ago, I made a bat costume for Isaac following instructions for a bog coat I found online. Isaac still wears the now infamous bat costume on occasion so I figured it would translate very well into a BatMAN costume for E3. Here’s my story.

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials
Software: Anti-Pill fleece in yellow, black and aluminum (gray)

Hardware: Generic sewing accoutrement

(restorative beverage optional but highly recommended)

Step 2: Cut and sew the gray fleece according to the instructions found here.

Step 3: Break for lunch

(Leftover roast chicken, rice and root veggies (the 3 R’s!!) sprinkled with nutmeg and pecans. Not pictured: pumpkin bread for dessert. Yum.)

Step 4: Make a Batman Logo and render it in fleece.

Essentially, I made an applique.

Step 5: From the black fleece, cut out a cape and hood. Attach to collar of jacket.

Step 6: Torture your child by stuffing him into his Halloween costume against his will.

(a side note, the shiner is because E3 took a header into the footrest of our Poang chair)

Step 7: Scream (silently) and pray for the strength and patience to survive the remaining years of mothering very young children.
