As Promised

It would be an understatement to say that my first attempt at this sock did not end well. So I decided that, rather than take another stab at the Sky Sockitecture from New Pathways for Sock Knitters, I would go with a more traditional heel flap sock.

I’ve been mucking around in toe-up-short-row-heel socks for so long, that I’d forgotten how that magical moment when your tube-with-a-flap becomes a sock can literally take your breath away with its simple elegance.

Miscalculations

I does dem.

(You’re looking at a sock with a circumference of 12″ around the heel/arch.)

And really, who isn’t?

Whereas I am a comment whore and

Whereas I have received more than 1000 comments since this blog’s inception and

Whereas I am immensely grateful for every comment I get and

Whereas I am declaring today Knitting Interrupted’s official Delurk Day,

I am happy to announce a comment contest!

Say hello via comment by 10/13 at 11:59. You’ll be entered into a random drawing for this lovely skein of Yarn Pirate in the June Bug colorway.

(from the Booty Club)

Every comment I’ve ever received on all posts since January 22, 2007 will be entered into the drawing, so if you’ve never commented before, now’s your chance. Anonymous comments and those from family will not be eligible (sorry Mom and TAS). I will select the winner by random integer generation and make every good-faith attempt to notify by email, as well as make the announcement in a blog post on 10/14/2008 at 9 am. Winner will have one week to claim the prize. After one week, I will draw a new winner.

Thanks to all my regular readers, and those that pass through.

How I Purl

Part two in a series. This is how I purl.

How I Knit

All the cool kids are posting videos showing how they knit, purl, crochet, and spin. Even though I’m not one of the cool kids, I thought I’d jump on in anyway. This is how I knit.

Options

So I’ve been thinking a lot about my Feather and Fan Cardigan. It’s definitely too big. There is just no way I can wear it comfortably. I’m pretty sure there are three options:

1. Do nothing and try to sell it for the cost of the yarn and the buttons (around $45). Any takers?

2. Frog and reknit the sweater in the same pattern but a different size.

3. Frog the sweater and use the yarn to knit a completely different sweater. Perhaps this? Or maybe this?

I can’t decide. What would you do?

I Knew Her When

My best friend from high school knitted a lace stole [ravelry] for her mother-in-law. Her mother-in-law turned around and secretly entered the stole in the county fair*. Guess who won first place in the lace division AND a Judges Award of Merit! It looks like her Monkey socks [ravelry] were also entered and took second. Jen, you are teh awesome!

*Note to self: do not give Jen’s mother-in-law any knitted gifts unless you want them entered in the county fair.

5 New Things

1. I now have two asthma inhalers. One is for maintenance, one is for acute attacks–a rescue. I use a spacer because I am inhaler-challenged. Here’s to better breathing in the weeks to come.

2. I have a new phone. Isn’t it nifty?

3.I finished the Feather and Fan Cardigan. I’m not sure what to do about it. It’s way too big. I wonder if I can shrink the hell out of it in a hot water wash. Any other suggestions?

4. I made the boys zippered coin purses. Isaac needs something for his library card and pocket change. E2 needs one because I-6 has one. It was the first sewing I’ve done since I retired from sewing back in April of last year. It wasn’t all that bad and I actually considered sewing the kids’ Halloween costumes this year. Then I came to my senses and repacked all my sewing regalia and stuffed it back in the closet.

5. The first Wollmeise Sock club shipment arrived today. I now understand what the big deal about Wollmeise is. The yarn is exquisite. The colors are absolutely breathtaking. And the Wollmeise herself is personable and sweet. If heaven were a sock yarn, it would be Wollmeise. (Click through for the photo.)

Over it.

I love knitting socks. Love it. Sock knitting is about as close to instant knitting gratification as you can get. And yet, right now? I’m so over it. These stupid socks I’ve been working on are cursed. Cursed I tell you! First the damn heel didn’t fit over Isaac’s foot, and then I screwed up on my calculations for the number of stitches required to make the stitch pattern bigger. *grumble* So, I decided to set them aside and start another pair of socks for my dad. 1st attempt–gauge issues. 2nd attempt–realization that I have insufficient yarn for the project. *Aaargh!!*

It’s official. I’ve lost my sock knitting mojo for the time being. I’m pretty much out of the running for the Summer of Socks anyway, and I did get four completed pairs in, twice as many as last year. One pair is even intended to be a Christmas gift, so how cool is that? But I can’t take it anymore right now. These socks have killed it for me.

So, now I’m moving on to other projects. [Ravelry] I’ve got the ruffly scarf to finish. And my feather and fan cardigan. I want to do a couple of hats for Christmas also, as well as a pair of Fetching and of Dashing. Ooh, crap. I’ve planned to do socks for my dad and another pair for my husband (argyle?!) as well. Shit man. I need to get organized.

  • Knits for Christmas Gifts
    a scrubbie or two
    1 pair Fetching
    1 pair Dashing
    2 double rib hats
    2 pairs of socks (dammit!!)
  • Eventually
Soakers and Longies (since we’ve officially made the switch to cloth diapering)
    Tangled Yoke Cardigan
    Indigo Ripples skirt
    Noro wallet
    Sweater of Rassilon

Happy Friday, y’all!
