An Open Letter

Dear Sen. Obama,

I believe in change. I believe we can heal this nation and seize our future. I believe in Yes We Can. But, sir, right now, I want to know how you’re going to help us with this:

Respectfully,

Jen

Sorry

I know I’ve been quiet this week. There has been a sort of strange confluence of circumstances which has made it impossible for me to compose a blog post of any interest. I hope to return to my regularly bloggy (and hopefully interesting) self soon. In the mean time, please enjoy this video. Thanks, twitchyknitter!

A Funny Thing Happened at the Grocery Store

Today, the gay cashier at Trader Joe’s said the matching sweaters I made for the boys were “faaa-bulous!”.

I am Sisyphus

Ever go to bed feeling fine and wake up feeling horrible? I woke up with a cold. But I can’t call in sick because I am a mother. I have to call the plumber instead.

The Birds

Some phenomena are impossible to document with a crappy digital camera, but I’ve wanted to blog about this for weeks. The area where I live has become a gathering place for all the crows for miles (I mean, thousands) around come to roost at night. Last year, the massive roost was about a mile from where I live and for about an hour or so before dark, we could hear them calling as they picked their favorite perches on which to settle down for the night. This year, the roost is in our yard and all along the street where we live. Every evening, as the light begins to fade and darkness starts to take hold, the skies are literally filled with crows as they stream in from all over. All the tree tops I can see are thick with the large black birds, noisily calling to one another, as they settle down for the night. It really is a beautiful sight and it fills me with awe and appreciation for nature every evening. I only wish I could get a better picture of it.

Update 1/13/08: I found a great link on the subject.

Pray for Peace

I really wanted to do a post today, but the assassination of Benazir Bhutto has kept me glued to the crap news coverage on CNN and MSNBC. There’s plenty I want to say about it, but I feel completely at a loss for words. Therefore, I direct you to my Totally Awesome Sister’s blog where she has not only succinctly summed up the tragedy, but in describing her own feelings about it, has surprisingly mirrored my own.

Now, I’m going to go take an infusion of wool. Here, would you like some?

More FOs

So, after my last post, I cast on this:

santa hat

A Santa Hat. I’ve had the yarn for this in my stash since the year I started knitting, so about 4 years now. I never cast it on because by the time I was in the mood to knit Santa Hats, I never thought I could finish in time for Christmas. My knitting skills must be coming along because I cast on Saturday afternoon and finished Sunday afternoon. Hooray for learning!

Anyway, when that was finished, I cast on this:

Doozer Bed

A Kitty Pi for Doozer. And, it’s a good thing, too, because last night the kids trashed the cheep-o cat condo we got at Target a couple of months ago. They must’ve caught a little cabin fever because hoo-boy was it crazy in here. Speaking of crazy, it’s starting to escalate again.

Ta!

Ugh!

Today has been one of those days, spent mostly distracted by the computer and cleaning up after children and I have nothing of interest really to report. I seem to have lost my writing groove, but seriously? Who could blame me? I want to knit but whenever I pick up my needles, the project I’m working on just seems to flail around in my hands and I have no love for it. To top it off, Christmas is just 22 days away and I am behind. Really behind. Usually I get ready for Christmas in November, but I was otherwise occupied. It’s not just my knitting that’s flailing, it’s me.

*glub, glub*

Ah well, tomorrow is another day!

Or maybe I’m doing it wrong…

This is my vacuum.

I would like to preface my remarks by first saying that I love my vacuum. This is a workhorse that really gets the job done, in spite of persistent abuse and mistreatment. Like the time I put the air filter in upside down (and vacuumed for months like that), or the numerous times the back end has gotten stuck around the corner and I yanked on the hose hard, or the fact that I’ve only had it serviced once since I purchased it seven years ago. I won’t even mention the dozens of bits of yarn and strings and pennies and Playmobil pieces and God knows what else it’s sucked up. But I digress.

There is just one thing I don’t get about this vacuum. It’s got a feature that I cannot for the life of me figure out. Way up by the handle, there’s this little door you can slide open to adjust the suction. See?

Open. Closed.

Can someone please tell me what in the HELL this thing is for? I don’t think that I’ve EVER, in the seven years I’ve owned this thing, said to myself, “Self, this vacuum just has TOO MUCH SUCTION! Let’s open this puppy up!” Seriously, has anyone in the history of vacuum cleaners ever said, “Hey, we need LESS suction! This baby’s pulling the tacks out of the carpet.”

I’m confused.
