A Lizard Adventure

Tonight, as we were getting ready to sit down to dinner, Isaac pointed at the ceiling and yelled “OMG THERE’S A LIZARD IN OUR HOUSE”. Doozer was really excited. I had the mister grab a glass and capture her so we could get her safely to the outside, but not before I snapped her picture. Seriously? I’ve seen spiders bigger than this:

So I guess this is like a normal thing now that we live in Florida. Random lizards just invite themselves to dinner. So much excitement.

3 am Epiphany · Knitting

In which my dream is prophetic.

The other night I had one of those knitter’s nightmares. You know the one, where you knit and knit and knit your socks-in-progress but never make any progress on it. Imagine my horror the next evening when I settled in to work on them and realized that the damn foot is a half-inch too long (note to self: my short-row heel is two inches long, not 1.5) making them unacceptably loose and baggy around the instep. I thought about just pressing on and maybe giving these socks as a gift (I mean, after all, they are bound to fit SOMEONE), but y’all, I love these socks. Seriously, dat orange! And so today my 2 toe-up socks went from this:

to this:

(That is the superfluous half-inch waiting to be frogged.)

Clearly, I can see the future so here’s your lotto numbers: 05-11-14-20-31 / 16

Totally Random Monday

1. The alpaca handspun has been locked in a smallish box with the mini dehumidifier I ordered from amazon for several days now. Very soon, maybe even tomorrow, I can either wrap the skeins into hanks or get started knitting with them. There is much to do, what with only 149 days until Christmas Day.

2. I finished the hand spun baby sweater:

It still needs a wash, but I think I’ll call it done for now anyway.

3. I thought I might’ve had enough leftover yarn to make a cute little hat to go with it but alas:

It wasn’t meant to be.

4. Lolly has, at long last, warmed up to Snowflake enough to share the big poofy cat bed (actually a bean bag chair) with him.

As you can see, he’s rather pleased with himself.

Knitting · Tour de Fleece

tDf: Wrap up post

Well, I definitely did not finish the Tour De Fleece and I had hoped to. I did manage to make some very lovely yarns though, and so I am happy. All together I came in at just under 840 yards of yarn, which isn’t too shabby, actually, and once my mini dehumidifier arrives I can get that alpaca yarn dry once and for all and start spinning again. In the mean time, I finished a dishcloth:

And started a baby sweater using my hand spun:

Oh my goodness, y’all, this baby sweater is so freaking pretty, I can’t even words.

Since I’m still waiting for that alpaca yarn to dry, I decided to go ahead and order one of these. If this doesn’t work to dry my hand spun yarns, nothing will and I’ll probably have to only wash yarns in the “drier” season. Which I’m told is what passes for winter around these parts. In the meantime, I shall comfort myself with the cutest wee tiny cookie jar ever.

(actually it’s a mug, but it’s too cute to use as a mug I think)

tDf: Day Whatever

So you may have noticed that the shine has gone of my enthusiasm for the Tour de Fleece and the reason why is this: all that yarn I washed back on day 8 IS STILL NOT DRY.* I am starting to worry that it might started to become mildewed, although I know intellectually that this is unlikely since wool is naturally mildew resistant. Still, OMG YOU GUYS THIS YARN IS STILL WET! It’s not super wet, you can feel just a little bit of wetness in the center of the yarn when you squeeze it. I made a post on in the Florida Spinners group on Ravelry (also Facebook), and while there have been a few responses, it’s nothing that I haven’t tried already. Also my cat is starting to eat the yarn. Lolly is such a dumbass, you guys. She thinks all this yarn hanging around is a special buffet I’ve laid out just for her. Yesterday when I was moving the yarn to a drying rack underneath the ceiling fan I found several severed strands where she has eaten who knows how many inches. ARGH. And so I figured that I’d better slow my yarn production until I can figure out how to get it dry more quickly so I can get it tucked safely into the stash before the damn cat gets to it. So far, in addition to all the normal stuff like hanging it with a fan nearby to blow on it, I have put it in a container of rice and am now considering sticking it in my electric food dehydrator.

*Actually, that’s not entirely true, the singles I made dried up beautifully. Their beauty shots are here and here.

tDf, day 13: More plying.

Today I andean plied the merino from Webs. I’m so happy with it!

Tomorrow I start on this:

I might have a little thing for Woolgatherings.
