Knitting Interrupted’s 2012 stats

I thought this was interesting, although I am sad that I only hit 58 posts this year. After such a strong start too. I’m hoping to be more blog-productive in 2013. Happy New Year, y’all!

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 19,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 4 Film Festivals

Finished Objects: A Yarny Retrospective

Only 19 this year. A big cross-country move followed by weeks and weeks of debilitating nausea really didn’t lend itself to finishing many projects, although I am happy with what I did manage to finish. Catkin came out beautifully and is one of those things I should probably start keeping in my purse to cover my shoulders in stores that have the AC going full blast. Of course, baby sweaters, although I probably won’t need them, haha. Hopefully I can finish up a few more baby things (hats and socks, likely) before I deliver in the spring.

Merry Christmas!

Hope you had a wonderful morning full of surprises!

life

In Which I ponder Christmas in Florida Before Showing You the Contents of My Uterus.

So I guess this is a thing we do now: take the kids to the pool the week before Christmas.

Eventually I know I will get used to the (exceedingly) subtle change of seasons here, but for now it feels weird to be trying to get into the Christmas spirit when it is 80° outside. One thing I have noticed is there are a LOT of Christmas lights down here, sometimes whole developments get into the spirit and when you’re driving around at night, you get these glimpses of entire streets, lit on both sides with house after house covered in lights. I admit that it almost makes up for the lack of cold weather and snow. Almost.

And, the other thing, which I have told the social medias but not the Blog, is that I am pregnant! Here is today’s u/s

This has been a pretty rough pregnancy so far. Being pregnant at 39 is waaaaaay different from being pregnant at 29. Seriously. For real. But things are moving along and the baby looks great. Also, we’re having a girl, so there’s that too. Which reminds me. I knitted up a BSJ a while back, but now that I know it’s a girl, I think I’d like something a little less neutral and a little more girly. You think it’d sell on Etsy? There are matching bootees too. :-)

Hahaha Joke’s on Me

So then yesterday I made a post about how I wanted to blog more and then today I went back to Facebook and Twitter and did the exact same thing!! I logged on this morning and pretty much hung out there all day. I shared links and all my random thoughts and I didn’t blog instead at all! I think what I really need to do is change my routine. Right now I get up and make coffee and then browse the social medias while I wake up in the morning. It’s kind of like the way people used to read the morning newspaper only with people I knew in high school and whatnot. And then, instead of signing off and staying away for the rest of the day, I just kind of hang out. I think tomorrow I will try reading my kindle over my morning coffee instead.

I admit that it’s been hard to stay away, especially since Friday. I have opinions, dammit! I’m just too tired to post about them there. I kind of wore myself out on Facebook, even though here, the Blog, might’ve been a better place for it. Alas. Instead, here’s a link to the Rude Pundit. He said it better than I could have anyway.

Today wasn’t totally wasted on Facebook (which, I think, means I did a better job than usual). I made marshmallows!

om nom nom!

Aren’t they pretty and festive? Also they taste like peppermint.

Once Upon a Time

I started this blog back in 2006, mostly as a means to reach out to family and friends (and maybe just a few people in the knit blogging community). It was fun, at first, it really was. And then came Facebook. And twitter. And I kind of lost my way with the blog. Facebook (and to a very lesser extent Twitter) became the repository for my link shares and random thoughts and the blog was relegated to mostly knitting content. The other thing that happened when Facebook and Twitter came along is that I started spending more and more of my time on the computer and less and less time doing other stuff, like knitting (and reading, and being outside, and having real life experiences and stuff) so I had fewer things to blog about and so the blog became boring and I became bored with the blog.

This realization makes me sad. I enjoy blogging. Or least I did enjoy it, back before I got sucked into the black hole that is social media, and I really would like to get back into it. So I am going to try something. Instead of posting my random thoughts and link shares and basically anything else to Facebook or Twitter first, I will post them here first. I’m going to start blogging again,  hopefully frequently.

Reinventing Halloween

A few years ago, we figured out that the kids and I all had various food allergies and intolerances. Isaac’s allergies were especially bad since they included peanut and soy. That Halloween we took the boys trick or treating anyway, figuring that we would be able to pick out the candy they COULD eat and they would have fun anyway. Except that night it was POURING rain. We went house to house anyway, like good little candy extortionists, in our costumes and raincoats, and collected a couple of sackfuls of candy. Then we went home to sort. You guys, it was so sad. Of all the candy we were given, there were only a few pieces the boys could eat. Everything else had soy. Or peanuts. Or wheat. It was an incredibly disappointing and miserable evening.

After that we didn’t much feel like trick or treating anymore, so instead we had to come up with a way to celebrate Halloween that didn’t involve trick or treats. I spent a lot of time thinking about what the kids liked the most about Halloween, aside from the going house to house. Costumes, candy, pumpkin carving. And so that’s what we do, except I added staying up late and watching movies. Here’s what our Halloween looked like tonight.

We had Frankenbeans for dinner:

And then pumpkins were carved:

Then we had cupcakes (instead of candy this year because of Isaac’s braces):

And now we are staying up late watching movies. Right now we are watching Megamind. The kids are lolling about in their costumes, sugared up (as they are meant to be on Halloween night). I admit to missing the trick or treating, a little, and I’m sure the kids do too, but it’s been a great evening, relaxing and fun, which we have spent together. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Happy Halloween, however you’ve celebrated!

Happy September

O Hai, blog. It’s September already. I’ve had a pretty good couple of weeks. We survived a glancing blow from our first major tropical storm, Isaac. Omg, so much rain! The canal behind our place got SSSSOOOOO FULL!

(here’s what it looks like normally) We were really lucky, although we did get a leak in the ceiling which got our TV wet. The big thing is our power never went out and so we never lost our sweet, delicious air conditioning. So, yay!

Then I tortured Lolly for fun.

And, yesterday, I cut off all my long hair.

I really admire people who can get good iPhone-in-the-bathroom-mirror shots of themselves. I had such a hard time posing myself, lol.

Also, I’ve been knitting, but of course there aren’t any pictures of that.

Nature Drama!

Today I glanced out the window with the corner of my eye and saw a bunch of ducks in the parking lot walking past the window. “Aw,” I thought, “it’s a duck parade!” But when I grabbed my camera and got a better look at what was happening, this is what I saw:

The ducks were shooing a pair of black vultures away from their favorite area under the bush beneath my window. Once they had convinced the vultures to move a comfortable distance away, they smugly returned to the shade and safety of the bushes. At least 4 of these guys were fuzzy little ducklings when we first moved in.

Here are the vultures looking all dejected.

DUCK PWN!

So they wandered over to the dumpster in hopes of a snack that doesn’t fight back.

But as I was getting ready to put my camera away, I noticed I wasn’t the lone spectator of this tiny drama.

This very lovely red-shouldered hawk was also watching. And waiting.
